If you do not use directional picking, you must use 30% more movement to play the identical notes (slowing down your picking speed). Directional picking motions can be similar to those used in sweep picking. As you practice directional picking, you will also learn how to pick sweep. It is critical to practice sweep picking in order to improve your directional pick. If you have no time to practice, directional picking is a great option.
