5 Must-Watch Movies About Famous Musicians

As a music lover, I’ve always wanted to learn more about the singer or the band I love listening to. Of course, there’s the following them on social media, watching fan cams, looking up interviews, and many more. That’s totally normal, and that’s what usually fans do. The good thing about the entertainment industry is that we get to see the lives of these big stars that are out of reach for normal people like us through films and TV series.

And since you’re here, you’re likely looking for your first or your next movie to watch. No matter the streaming services you’re subscribed to, I’ve come up with a list of my favorite movies about popular music artists.

  1. Selena (1997)

‘Cause I’m dreaming of you tonight… ‘til tomorrow, I’ll be holding you tight~ Does that sound familiar to you? Selena, the movie, is about Selena, the singer. Selena Quintanilla is a Mexican-American singer known for singing hits such as Como La Flor, Dreaming of You, No Me Queda Mas, and more. This biopic tells the story of her journey to becoming the Queen of Tejano Music. Since she grew up in a musically inclined family, it seemed like it was her true calling. Unfortunately, her reign was cut short when she got murdered (shot) one night.

  1. Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)

Whitney Houston is one of the legends in the music industry. I first heard her when I was still a kid, but I was only able to watch this several months ago when it became available on Netflix. It’s also available on other streaming services, but I’m not sure if it includes other platforms like Sling TV and DISH TV. The movie is about Whitney’s life before and during fame, as well as her unfortunate death at the end. You’ll hear some of her greatest hits, including The Greatest Love of All, I Will Always Love You, Why Does It Hurt So Bad, of course, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, and others.

  1. Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

Of course, who would want to miss the story of one of the greatest rock bands in history? Bohemian Rhapsody is about the band Queen and the legendary Freddie Mercury. Of course, like other biopics, the movie is all about their journey as a band — how they created their hit songs, performed some of the best concerts of all time, and the struggles Freddie went through with fame and his personal life. Rami Malek is definitely commendable in this movie, hands down for sure.

  1. What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993)

If you haven’t watched Tina Turner’s incredible story, you’re missing out on one of the most inspiring movies ever made. Tina is Tina – the talented lady behind Proud Mary, What’s Love Got to Do with It, River Deep Mountain High, and many many more. The movie shows how she became the Tina we know, the challenges she faced, the years of domestic abuse and heartbreak, and her redemption when she finally decided to leave Ike and rebuild her life and career from scratch. It’s a truly inspiring movie, just make sure you have a fast wireless service when you watch it because it’s a really great movie.

  1. I Am: Celine Dion (2024)

I had a phase when I got addicted to Celine Dion songs. Since she’s past my generation, my friends didn’t understand why I was so obsessed. But honestly, how can you not be moved by her unique, powerful voice and emotional songs? In I Am: Celine Dion, we not only get to celebrate her incredible career but also witness her strength as she opens up about her struggles with Stiff-Person Syndrome. This rare neurological illness has impacted her ability to perform, but her determination and love for music and her fans shine through. It’s really touching. I highly recommend you watch this biopic.

Wrapping Up

There you have it! These are just some of my personal favorites. I have yet to watch other movies about famous musicians, but these movies are a great start. Especially if you know them, which I know you do, you will enjoy the stories of their lives. Of course, all the movies aren’t 100% accurate, but we get an idea of what really happens behind the screen. Hope you enjoy!
